Five new conservation zones

Five new conservation zones are to be established around the Island’s coastline, to protect important marine species and wildlife.

Commercial fishing will be banned in the zones, between the shore and three miles out to sea.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture  (DEFA) says the scheme will balance leisure activities with recreational fishing and fishing with less impact such as crab and lobster potting.

Dredge and trawl fishing will continue to be managed within three miles of the shoreline outside the zones – with restricted access in place for boats.

DEFA held a consultation on proposals for marine zones in the spring of 2016, which included a series of public meetings and drop-in sessions around the Isle of Man.

The department says fisheries and conservation interests have played a major role in shaping the new system.

Recently the Isle of Man was named as one of the best places in the world to explore nature. This status came from the world heritage body Unesco which has designated the entire island a Biosphere Reserve, celebrating and protecting the breadth and range of its biodiversity.
